Blog Round Up – Winter 2016

This post is a selection of blog posts published by CA secondary students in the past two months.  Students post work on their blogs from all subject areas and activities to demonstrate their learning, reflect and show growth.  Please read these posts and feel free to comment.  If you have a student enrolled in our secondary school, please check out your child’s blog. There are hundreds of good blogposts published by our community every month.

In February, all middle school students went ski trips.  Most students wrote reflections of their time and what they learned. Here’s George’s post about his time on the seventh grade trip.  Cherin also wrote a great post about the sixth grade trip to Hachi-kita.

Saakhi has been doing a lot of service and film work for CATV, read about her reflection from filming a recent soccer game.

Grade 9 students have just completed their Personal Projects and all students have been documenting their process journals on their blogs.  Check out Ray’s post of his final project. His passion for soccer led him to create tutorials for other players and develop his YouTube Channel: Ray the Goalkeeper while mentoring CA soccer players to improve their game.

Aimi has done a lot of great service projects this year through Eco Club and Student Body Council, read about them here.

Hazel recorded a podcast about cultures in Humanities class.

In Grade 7 Humanities, students are writing journalistic articles on a world issue. Read Sophia’s post about Human Trafficking in Ghana and Ragini’s post on Education in Africa.

In grade 6, PE students learned about self-esteem during Health Class.  Students created PSA videos to share their learning and encourage others to have self-esteem.  Watch Martino’s PSA video!

Grade 9 Food Design class started second semester with a few weeks of skill building activities, like learning proper knife cutting skills, making pastry dough, reading a recipe, measuring and converting recipes.  Read Anjali’s and Andy’s reflections on how class has been going for them.

Grade 6 are writing book reviews on their blogs.  Read Isha’s book review on The Sign of the Beaver.

Secondary School Blog Round Up: August-September 2015

The blogs are buzzing with so much great learning and reflection.  This blogpost is just a small sample of the number of blog posts that have been written since school has started this year!  Please read and comment on student blogs.

There is alway a lot of great learning, reflecting, service and activities going on at CA.  Here are some student posts that highlight all of this great learning in and out of school.

 

Read what Masao wrote as he analyzed 3D printers and their ethical use in Japanese class.

This past month, all middle school students went on trips to foster teamwork and friendships and learn more about nature and Japanese culture.  There are many fantastic blog posts about individual student experiences.  Check out a few here: Piya’s trip to Green Echo, Aki’s trip to Awaji and Haruki’s trip to Wakasawan.

This summer a few students and teachers went to Tohoku to continue CA’s work with area schools after the horrible earthquake in 2011.  Read Shaun’s blogpost about his service and impact from his Tohoku trip this past summer.

High school art classes are sharing their work and reflections of their first pieces this year. See Aya’s and Hina’s artwork and reflections here.

This year, Drama students are using their blogs to showcase and reflect on their work.  Watch Ahmad’s group as they perform a movement sequence and read more about the process and his reflection. Sohan also shared his groups’ performance and he reflected on how they created still images from a song.

All students and teachers at CA are required to create goals to improve our learning and performance. All students post their goals on their blogs.  Check our your child’s blog and see how you can support them with their newly created goals.  Here is an example of a tenth grade student’s goals by Kyu-Hyeok.

In Japanese class, Jessie wrote a blogpost for a reading response to her independent reading.

Grade 10 students have been diligently working on their Personal Project and have started their inquiry.  They will be documenting their personal projects through their blogs to share with the community.  Here are some examples of this year’s projects: Karuna’s, Fayaz’s and Min-Suk’s .

Saakhi posted about her art class field trip to the Kobe Biennale Museum.

There is alway a lot of great learning, reflecting, service and activities going on at CA.  Here are some student posts that highlight all of this great learning in and out of school.

Grade 9 had a lot of extension activities for their latest Humanities Unit.  They visited Hiroshima and Miyajima and a week later, Ms. Kondo a Hiroshima survivor came to speak to the class.  Read Alyssa and Ray’s reflections on Hiroshima and Uday’s and Sumire’s reflections on Ms. Kondo’s presentation.

Read about Nikolas’s “Dos and Don’ts of Skiing” as a engaging way to share his experiences of the Ski Trip through English class.

As the Personal Project finishes for Grade 10 students next week, their blogs have many process journal posts.  Mary has three detailed posts, sharing her progress on an animated music video: Loops from Feb 8, Raw Frames Completion from Feb 23, and Scanning from Feb 26th.

In honor of Valentine’s Day, Fred draws a comic as a part of his Personal Project.

Anajli shares her most memorable moment on the ski trip.

Karuna wrote an engaging and thorough blogpost about a “salty” experiment in Chemistry: Insert Salty Title Here.  Minsuk recorded his findings and learning in a blogpost with an equally witty name: Sault Assault.

Pratishtha wrote a great reflection on playing basketball this year.

Cindy writes about the eighth grade ski trip: New Memories and Experiences.

Grade 9 Food Designers are keeping Photography Journals to document foods that they design and make and also meals and ingredients that inspire them to create.  Here is Adarsh’s Food Journey blogposts.

Young Jae  wrote a great blogpost to encourage students to come to CA in his ESOL class.

Kiho reflects on Orchestra Class and an exchange with Ikeda High School.

On February 14th and 15th, CA hosted a Google Summit where teachers learned about using Google Apps in Education and collaborated and networked with each other.  Many secondary students volunteered to help over the weekend and some shared their work with teachers.  Here is Yumi’s reflection and Jiho’s reflection.

December – January Blog Round-Up

December and January are busy months, even though we are only in classes for half of each month.

Here are some of the wonderful things going on around our Digital and “real life” community:

Read Ray and Koki‘s Japanese book reviews.

Shoko reflects on her family trip to Hong Kong and highlights her sister’s photography too!

Clara created a poster to promote water conservation in Design class.  Check out her poster and reflection of her design process here.

The Middle School’s Thai Fundraiser has concluded for the year with six eighth graders traveling to Thailand to hand out scholarships and learn more about the students we are helping.  Read more about their experiences and reflections in Nikolas’s blog, Ashna’s postMirai’s postTaiga’s post, Kana’s post , Yasmine’s post and Shaun’s post.

Deeva has shared all the work she has done for her Personal Project in January with a blog post.

There are a lot of great activities going on in MS ESOL classes, read about it Jinbo’s post and Ebba’s post about the clip Feeding Us All.

In Physics tenth graders are exploring blog writing through real life applications, read about Arushi’s research on car accidents and adjusting your headrest.

It’s always great to read what students are doing outside of school activities.  Read Asuka’s post about his trip to Sendai for Winter Break.

In Grade 6 Science, Jinbo used Powtoon to create a fun video demonstrating her understanding of the microscope.

Many students reflect on language in the media.  Read Taana’s reflection in Japanese here.

Mr. Bellew posts a lot of great media to analyze on his blog as he prepares his students in their Language and Literature class.

Sixth and seventh grade English students posted about their Winter Break through images and text.  There are a lot of great examples on student blogs.  Start with Ragini’s and Jae Young’s for good examples.

There are so many amazing things that CA students are doing to compassionately impact their world.  There are hundreds (really!) of service posts this month as we finished semester one.  Read about Kaiki’s experience at the KISS Elderly House.

CA students frequently post their work and reflections on their blogs.  Blogging is a way for learners to share what they are learning, show growth and collaborate with others. This is a highlight of student blogposts from the last two months.

Band classes are using a lot of self-reflection and videos so students can evaluate their own growth and skills.  Here is a beginning of the year video of Matthew, Shaun, Peyton, Patrick and Asuka.

In 7th grade Humanities, students learned about bartering through an interactive activity.  Read about Haruki experiences.

In 10th grade Physics, students considered the effects of speeding and its impact on our community. Read more about their research and analysis in Fred’s post.

Melanie wrote a great summary of her 8th grade summer reading of Unique.

Linnea has been avidly reflecting on her blog about her Personal Project.  Find out more about her plans to become a gymnastics coach.

Grade 6 Designers practiced their newly acquired Photography skills and knowledge on a trip around Rokko Island.  Check out: Paul’s post, Callum’s post, Mark’s post and Maksim’s post.  There were so many beautiful photos of different perspectives of Rokko Island taken by the sixth grade!

Riri wrote a detailed reflection about what she learned in PE during their football unit.

Mid-October, Yusei Yogo students came to CA.  Many CA students helped make this outing special for the students and got just as much out of the trip as our visitors.  Read about Nina’s experience here.

As a ninth grader, Saakhi was happy to be able to volunteer at ARK, read about her first experience.

Yu created a beautiful observational drawing of a viola for art.
