Task (to do): Research on general use of social media use within younger age groups; elementary students.

  • Research under-age use of social media
  • Research what applications/ websites are commonly used or are most popular
  • Research for what purpose the applications are being used.

Method: Look online for reports done on social media use within a younger age group or online websites

Outcome (done): Under-age use of social media is something that I had noticed amongst CA students and felt was something that had to be urgently addressed and thus was not surprised to see that this was an issue worldwide. Throughout my online research, I learnt that instagram and facebook are the two most commonly used social media platforms.

Task (to do): Research the pitfalls of the internet and social media

  • Research the dangers of social media
  • Research a specific case of this proving to be a reality

Method: Research will be done online, looking at online articles, blog posts etc.

Outcome (done): I researched the dangers of social media including “stranger danger”, not knowing the true identity of who you are interacting with because they are behind a screen, possibly leading to cat fishing or dangerous encounters. Additionally, I learnt about cases of oversharing of information or personal information being leaked and cyber-bullying. I learnt about a case of identity theft which brought serious consequences, which can be included in my video.

Task (to do): Research the terms and conditions of instagram and facebook.

Method: Go to the official page of terms and conditions of instagram and facebook and read, researching unknown concepts or terms.

Outcome (done): I expected very lengthy texts that are very opaque but I did not except the vocabulary to be this hard to comprehend. I realize that a lot of research is needed to understand the concepts without flaw and convert it into kid-friendly terms.

Task (to do): Plan components that will make up my video

Method: I will do this by determining which issues need to be addressed and what I want to communicate to my audience.

Outcome (done): I decided on including the following components; survey results about social media use within elementary students of CA, a real-life example of identity theft, analysis of key parts of the terms and conditions of instagram in kid-friendly terms, and tips that could be followed to improve the security and safety of the user.

Task (to do): Identify the key parts of the terms and conditions that should be analyzed and converted into easier words and start to analyze.

Method: I will do this by reading through the terms and conditions of instagram and look at parts that could potentially have a big impact on the life of the user.

Outcome (done): I decided that I will be focusing on parts talking about personal data because I will be including an example of identity theft before the analysis of terms and conditions in my video and also because leakage of personal data could bring disastrous consequences upon the user.
